All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System Functional Inspection for Pontiac Vibe - FWD 2005
Functional Inspection
Functional Inspection is a mechanical system inspection for the
coupling in the differential carrier and will assist in determining if:
| • | The coupling in the rear differential is operating correctly. |
| • | There is a mechanical connection between the rear differential ring and
pinion, the propeller shaft, the transfer case, the coupling and the transmission
assembly. |
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Lift the vehicle in a manner that will
allow all four wheels to rotate during testing. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Start the engine.
- Move the gear shift lever to the DRIVE position.
Important: Do not accelerate the vehicle with the parking brake applied for a period longer
than 5-7 seconds.
- Fully apply the parking brake to create resistance in the rear wheels. The
rear wheels should stop spinning. The front wheels should reduce in speed which
indicates a correctly operating system.
